MUSIC EDUCATION : LIFE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS:
SUMMER RHYTHM RENEWAL ™ Directed by Jim Donovan

The 2006 Summer Rhythm Renewal at Saint Francis University is a one of a kind, world-class educational event. Since 2004, the focus of this program has been to engage students as well as adult learners from all over the United States in a culturally rich, all-inclusive music program. Our programs are unique because they are based on the premise of enabling participants to learn, engage and perform with some of the world's top performer/educators in the field of World Music regardless of prior musical experience. Our philosophy is that students learn best in a completely hands-on, relaxed, safe environment without the pressure of being perfect. Beginners are warmly welcomed. We even provide the instruments. This program is built for adults over 18.

Workshops include:
The Yoga of Drum and Chant : Transformative sacred chant and ecstatic drumming workshop
West African Drumming : Songs, rhythms, cultural lessons, techniques, concepts
Central African Drumming: Songs, rhythms, cultural lessons, techniques, concepts
North Indian Classical Drumming : The Tabla : Interactive Performance master class for everyone
Middle Eastern Drumming: Songs, rhythms, techniques, concepts
Australian Didgeridoo: Songs, techniques, concepts
The Community Drum Circle: Joyful Music Making for Everyone
Private lessons and Consultations available with select faculty (Additional fee applies)

International Faculty:
Jim Donovan : Pittsburgh, PA : International performance, teaching and recording artist. Founding member of multi-platinum band Rusted Root)/Saint Francis faculty, Director of the new Saint Francis University World Drumming Ensemble.

Elie Kihonia : Democratic Republic of Congo : Master Drummer/Multi Instrumentalist, international performance teaching and recording artist. Founder of Afrika Yetu, WACongo and UMOJA African Arts Companies.

Jim DiSpirito: Pittsburgh, PA: Percussionist, composer, teacher and recording artist/producer. Former percussionist for Rusted Root. Percussion ensemble director/Eden Christian Academy (Pittsburgh); Rhythm & Performance workshop director/Shady Side Academy (Pittsburgh). Owner/Hillside recording studio (Pittsburgh).


Daveed Korup : Charlotte, NC: Master Percussionist/ Composer/ Author/ International performance, teaching and recording artist. Founder of Drumfest! World Percussion education programs.

Sogbety Diomande : Ivory Coast : Master Drummer/Sacred Masked Stilt Dancer/ Performer Ballet National de Cote d’ Ivoire/Lead Djembe, Jimmy Buffett World Tour 2002

Maureen "Moe" : Allentown, PA : Community Drum Facilitator : Women's Drumming

Mike Deaton : Harrisonburg, VA : Community Drum Facilitator : Children's music

Jim Gagnon : Charlottesville, Va : Didgeridu performer/teacher/builder : Sound Therapist


PROGRAM COST: 275.00 (plus the cost of 1 credit if your are taking the class for credit)
On campus housing is available starting at 37.00 per day.
Meals are $7 each (Buffet style, quite good!).

A very limited number of private consultations with select faculty are available at $75 per hour.
