Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 1:29 PMUuhhh, yeah!
Hey Lance, this is paul from the SF's east bay. I'm undercover spreading the rhythm revolution. I think the common vision crew and a few others are in and around. I cant remember who all at this point.
by the way, some of the pics for this tribe were from the last DV gathering. I didnt put anyones face (not a good security issue) but I wanted some dunun action represented. alot of the time people all all "djembe-djembe-djembe" so I thought I would balance it out a bit.

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Mon, September 7, 2009 - 6:55 PMI'm in the same boat, not on tribe much either just as a resource if I need to find out some info on something. Its good for about once a week or so... Don't think I'm rolling to DV either this time, it conflicts with power to the peaceful here in SF and I don't want to drive up for a short weekend. Some of my best gatherings have been the small ones, as people pull together and step up more than when there is a lot of heads present.

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 4:04 PMi'm a dunun player - would love to hear more about DV or even a link :)
although, before i moved from the east coast, a lot of our gatherings had become dunun-rich, e.g. 30 djembes and 9 people with full sets of 3 duns :)
now THAT's a firecircle!! :P -

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 12:24 PMI've been with the DVer's at some rainbow gatherings for drumming, dancing and celebrating as well as chillin out in cali w/ a few. Andrew that sounds like a huge drum circle ! Personally our most powerful circles are with only three or so djembes w/ one lead player and three djuns or course. I play the djuns and really am one of the only who builds and plays them in the philly area, that I know of, regardless lets keep expanding limitlessly into the organic rhythms !
Peace & Bless -

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 6:40 PMhey Drew,
ya - it is a big one. most of the places i have been playing for the past few years are bigger circles. there is good an bad in it. my favorit size is about 3, 4 dunun players with 1-2 drums each, 5-6 djembe, with only a couple venturing off into lead parts, and enough shakere', bell, didg, clave, etc players to round it all out :) if it gets much bigger then the wall of sound thing happens OR facilitation has to take place in a somewhat overt way - and that has it's own issues.
and hey - a friend of mine makes dununs and djembes, not too far from philly (wycombe?) www.spiritinthewood.com/
i know probably 25 people in the greater DC area (maryland, wv, etc) who do that kind of circle (although the biggest one's i've done are at SpiritFire in NY (www.spiritfirefestival.org) and at Firedance in Santa Cruz (www.firedance.org).
lemme know if you want me to dig up more info on folks nearer to you - there is a lot going on in east coast, if you dont mind driving a few hours :)
cheers,
a

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 2:46 PMSome of my friends from Portland, OR go and I am planning on going this spring. I belong to an all women's troupe that plays West African traditional music in which I play the dununs. I was told there was a website for the gathering but have been unable to locate one. Is there a contact person, site, to find out more information on location and dates?

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 11:45 PMYeah...
Been to DV camp, a couple of times, and a bunch at Rainbow.
Much respect to all of those players who have inspired me...
Now, I'm livin in Santa Cruz, where there are some awesome classes goin on for dancing, and the drummers, many who I've seen playing at DV, are there, RAGING it...
I am going on Common Vision Fruit Tree Tour, where we play west african rythms, and plant trees with kids at urban schools in CA! Hope to be learning a bunch this year, been studying a bit of rythms from Owa's book, "West African Rythms", a nice compilation I picked it up at DV last summer....
Peace out!

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Wed, February 8, 2006 - 7:44 PMOh yeah! Southern Oregon in the house! Represent!
Can't wait til the spring gathering! Hoping to bring down a big posse from So. Or. this year. We have a lot of dundun family out here in Ashland/Williams/Takilma/Medford. Neither of my drum teachers will come because there are no hotels nearby. You'd think after living in Africa all these years they'd be up for the rustic livin'. Weeds out the crowd, I guess.
See you there!

Re: Any Dunun-Villagers here?
Sun, December 21, 2008 - 7:56 PMHey I just wanted to give some long advanced notice that we're planning to get something like DV going up here in the NW. Two gatherings are planned for sometime around next summer -- one near Port Townsend, probably in July, & one near Twisp in E. Wash., timing to be determined. I'll post more details as they become known.
