Hey all!
I am settling into life in Portland, and I would love to make drumming here a more regular thing in my life. I have been primarily playing dununs for the past 3 year and love creating that solid rhythmic foundation. I have one friend who is looking to play more dununs in the near future. It would be great to find one more player with even a little experience to practice on a fairly regular basis.
I could benefit with even just a few hours a week, and I would love to do it with friends. I have had some guidance but recently have been learning from Mamady's book.
Any one interested...
Any other thoughts of how I can get deeper into it?
thanks!
carl

Re: Looking for dunnun player in PDX
Sun, February 11, 2007 - 12:57 AMWelcome to Portland, Bridge!
Obo Addy plays dundun; so does his nephew John, recently arrived from Ghana. I know they run classes in Ghanaian handdruming (kpanlogo drums) and donos (talking drums from N. Ghana.) I bet you could get a dundun class, or find out if any of the Lewis and Clark students who went to Ghana are still doing drum circles. Contact Homowo for more info:

Re: Looking for dunnun player in PDX
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 2:04 AMI believe Bridge was looking for people who play Mande-style dununs (bass drums), not Ghana-style dunduns (talking drums), but maybe the Obo info will be helpful to him or others here as well.... -

Re: Looking for dunnun player in PDX
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 1:49 PMYes
I actually met Obo, and the ghana-style is different. I am just really hoping to find one more player to have three.
Thank you for all your ideas. I had gone by rhythm traders and met Cahon, but I don't want to be a distraction in a djembe class, but I will search out dance classes. I really enjoyed playing weekly for dance classes while I was in Las Vegas.
I hope I will run into you again Lance... maybe OCF this summer!

Re: Looking for dunnun player in PDX
Wed, March 28, 2007 - 10:06 AMWelcome to Portlandtown. I have been playing dununs for about 8 years now. Both with Caton (from Rhythm Traders), and in a troupe that played traditional West African music. I have also studied with Mamady, Famadou, and locally with Sekou. Caton comes to our house every other Wednesday for a small group lesson. Would love to get together and play some music and know another dunun player that I am certain would like to join in also. Contact me through tribe and I can help you get connected with some local drummers.
