Hey everyone.
my friend and I are planning on going to study music this winter in west africa. We have contacts in Konakry, Guinee. Also a few in Mali and Gambia.... Going to be going to the festival in the desert in Mali, for starters
Looking to further study Djembe/DunDun
Kora/Ngoni/Bolan
Balaphone
Fula Flute
Thought that I might be able to glean some insight.... Thanks Y'all

the best festival in mali is the festival sur le niger in segou i believe. way much better then the festy in the desert so i've been told.
i'm hoping to back this winter but i'm trying to figure out who i'm going to study with. i got people in mind in guinea and Mali but it's just a matter of it all coming together.
do you have specific teachers you're going to study djembe/duns with? -

Tue, October 31, 2006 - 4:53 PMBernard Woma at the Daagare music center outside of Accra, Ghana is a *terrific* gyil player (the low-slung gourd balaphon of N. Ghana.) Funny guy, too. I know they offer accomodations at the school. But check his schedule, he's been travelling in and out of the US too. I have been hearing bad things lately about Mustapha Tettey Addy's place west of Accra, it's supposedly gone downhill.
I liked Ghana, pretty and friendly. *Really* want to go to the Mali festivals, tho -- I'm horribly jealous!

Tue, October 31, 2006 - 10:27 PMHi,
Festival sur le Niger is a well run festival and worth the trip. Don't book your tour with Savane though, they dumped us at a vacant house outside of town instead of at their resort as promised.
We did hire a great Dogon guide named Momo - here are his particulars: www.momostours.com/
Momo can guide you from Bamako, Djenne, Mopti, Segou & Dogon country - maybe others as well.

Thu, November 16, 2006 - 10:11 AMI've traveled to Conakry, Guinea. I've been to Bke' and Coya as weel with Guinea. It was a wonderful experience. I staied with the Kouyate' family. If you want to learn balaphone I recomend you find a kouyate family member who plays balaphone. there are ALOT of them in Conakry but not all of them play bala. While I was there we studied with somefolks from up in the hills. find an african you trust in the area's you plan to travel to and they can usually help you find a good set up. The most important thing you can do is open your heart to the people and the experience because you will get more out of it than you had hoped to.

Re: Traveling to west africa-asking for advise/thoughts/comments
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 2:21 PMI went to Guinee to study dance with Moustapha Bangoura. He has a wonderful camp in Kissosso, a suburb of Conakry. His U.S. contact is 773 726 8354. Call him before Dec as he is leaving soon. There is also a fun camp out at the island of Conakry. Dibo Camara runs that and his number is 541 858 8969. Good luck, these are great teachers. Peace, Jasmine Star.
