Heya guys,
Just wanted to share a recent video with you all: all opinions appreciated
www.youtube.com/watch
In April 2008 some of the finest drummers in the Gambia were not only my teachers of traditional West African percussion music, but also became my percussion section for my compositions!
It was a very special time for me, and a great chance to work with some fantastic musicians from Africa.
It did feel very odd at first, telling a master drummer how I wanted to him to play an drum that he had mastered as a child. They were all really open minded to my compositions and it all got picked up really quickly.
Once the guys knew how the parts I had written should lock together, it just grooved and sounded like I had always wanted it to when I originally wrote the music.
We recorded towards the end of the week and am working on getting the recordings finished, hopefully to tour this material with the guys and then get them into the schools to run workshops in west africa drumming.
Thank you Mango Ballet for the experience and we will record again soon! Thanks to Jahman for setting the whole thing up for me, and Karl Jah for filming!
Mr.Will
