Does anyone know of a good place to acquire the lyrics and song melodies that accompany the rhythms of Guinea primarily? Rather than get a Konate or Keita music CD, I'm looking for books that contain the lyrics, translations, actual sheet music (which ain't gonna happen), and a sample CD.
I've found an instructional book (with CD) that has over 80 songs from 6 languages and English translations called Songs of Africa. I'm leary of getting it because I get a sense that the songs are more akin to Ghana and Zimbabwe.
Specifically, I'm looking for the melodies (and more lyrics would be nice) to:
Somba Koro (a song for gidamba)
Sinte
Menie
Liberte (the 6/8 version)
Djole (Sierra Leonne)
or anything else from Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Sierra Leonne, Mali...
It just seems that I can get lyrics but no melody or melody from a performance but have to guess at the lyrics (without translation).
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Thx.

Re: Song lyrics and melodies
Mon, July 17, 2006 - 10:19 PMI dont know where you are located but it really helps to take drum lessons from a source musician. They can usually tell you the song and what the dance looks like. I was with Famoudou last weekend and he said that there are many more songs than rhythms, and that different songs may be sung over different rhythms. Some rhythms are developed from the song melodies. Famoudou did songs for 2 of the four rhythms he presented, and he wrote them down, but the "E" was like "ay" so if you dont have it on tape, it would be hard to figure it out.
good luck,
