High Sierra West African Drum and Dance Gathering Sept 26th and 27th

Welcome
To the High Sierra West African Drum and Dance Gathering in the North Lake Tahoe Area at the lovely Clair Tappaan Lodge will happen Sat Sept 26th and Sun 27th, 2009.
The gathering is intended for those interested in the music and dance of West Africa and to grow together as a community; musically, spiritually, and playfully!

General Info:
Clair Tappaan Lodge is a rustic lodge located near the famous Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in the North Lake Tahoe area. See: Ctl.sierraclub.org for more details.
-Rooms in the lodge are available for $46 taxes included/night/per person. Please contact Clair Tappaan Lodge to reserve your spot for this event.
-Kids 4-13 yrs old are $20/night taxes included.
-Infants/toddlers 3yrs old or less are free
Day Passes: $20/adult includes a lunch ticket
-4-13 yr olds are $5 w/lunch
-3 yr or less are free
Classes are informal, and anyone is welcome to teach or participate.
**For those staying at the Lodge three meals a day will be offered w/a vegetarian option.

Here are some ground rules:

-No private fires.
-Park your car in parking area when not unloading.
-Dogs are allowed on grounds not in building. Owners are responsible for dogs. Please no problem dogs.

What to Bring
Camping gear (unless paying for a bed in the lodge), bowl and spoon, snacks, flashlight, drums, toys (juggling clubs, hoops, or whatever else you fancy).
Clothes for all weather. It will likely be quite hot during the day, but can cool off at night. September in the High Sierras tends to have warm, clear days with colder evenings so bring some shorts and also warm weather clothes.

Workshops
Both morning and afternoon there will be drum and dance workshops in the back yard and in the building- probably after dinner, too! Drum classes can also be arranged at all times in different clearings and rooms. Classes often happen spontaneously, so don’t be shy to ask if you want to learn. Workshops will be posted at the information center within the lodge.

Volunteers
This is your gathering. If staying in the lodge please contribute your energy by volunteering for at least one shift of: kitchen help, clean-up. Please come early or stay late to help set up/clean up if you can!
We’ll have a sign-up sheet posted at the information station to help organize volunteer efforts.

Dinner Circle
There will be a dinner circle every evening. This is our moment to gather as a community and communicate about our needs and offer our blessings, so please come.

Getting There
Clair Tappaan is located at 7000 feet in California's Sierra Nevada. It's 45 minutes west of Reno and one and a half hours drive east of Sacramento just off of Interstate 80. The address is 19940 Donner Pass Road in Norden.
From eastbound I-80, take the exit for Soda Springs/Norden - old U.S. 40 - also called Donner Pass Road. Go 2.4 miles east on Donner Pass Road. The lodge is at 19940 Donner Pass Rd. (old U.S. 40). Look for our sign on your left.
You can use the old, steep footpath (about 40 feet elevation change) leading up to the Lodge's South entrance. Or slightly to the east is easier access to the lodge North entrance. Use the road up to the tri-lodge area. There is a loading/unloading zone (short term parking for drop offs).
Transportation from Reno Airport to Clair Tappaan Lodge
Parking is available on either side of the road.
You can check road conditions online at the CAL-TRANS website.

I am looking for a nice hardwood african djembe in about the five hundred dollar range.
I have traditional hawaiin shell leis (necklaces) for trade. These necklaces are made out of one of the rarest shells in the world. Kahelelanis. Kahelelani means "The pathway to heaven" . Back in the day these necklaces were made for only the king and queen of hawaii, when they passed from this life to the next. hence "The pathway to heaven" Today they are still made by the local kauain and niihaun families. I was blessed enough to learn how to make them in kauai. They are the only shell in the world considered a gem.
There are anywhere from 5 to 3000 shells on each necklace depending on the style. The prices ranges are from 100 to 1000 dollars for the ones that i make. You can check them out on my tribe photos. I am willing to trade a double strand rope for a nice djembe.
Thank you

Our track "Monday" has just been recorded and is up at www.myspace.com/misterwillguitar
Not traditional West African music I know, but I wrote the piece (tgoether with the djembe and dun arrangements) to integrate the percussion with guitars etc. So on there are my good West African drum masters playing djembe, dundun, sangban, kenkeni. Here I laid down the guitars and bass.

If you go to the place on myspace it should be the first track that plays. You can also see a short video of us in rehearsal out there in Gambia. I would love to hear any opinions.
Remember, Camp Fareta is coming up soon -- July 6-13 in central California -- with an amazing line-up of master drummers and dancers from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali, hosted by Youssouf Koumbassa. There are work-exchange opportunities, group rates if you get together a group of eight or more from your area, and you can pay by Paypal. Prices go up after June 23, so now is the time to register.

Check http://dancingvillage.com/ for all the details, including a registration form and lots of photos from the last two years. The vibe is sweet and harmonious, there will be a delicious international menu prepared by a former Esalen chef, including some African meals, and the location, near Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, is beautiful. It's an amazing opportunity for a West African immersion without leaving the States. We hope you'll join us!
There will be an amazing crew of artists from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali, two drum classes and three dance classes a day, fire circles at night, an amazing chef from Esalen, a kids' program for the young ones, work-exchange opportunities, and a friendly village atmosphere, all in a beautiful location with a lake for swimming, canoeing, or just a quick dip after class.

Camp Fareta is hosted by Youssouf Koumbassa, a master dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Guinea, West Africa. The other artists who will be in residence include:

Drummers: M'Bemba Bangoura, Fode Bangoura, Mangue Sylla, Bolokada Conde, Wadaba Kourouma, Karamba Dioubate, Amadou Camara, Moussa Traore, Cheikh M'Baye, and Lansana Kouyate (balafon)

Dancers: Abdoulaye Sylla, Moustapha Bangoura, Alseny Soumah, Mariama Camara, M'Mah Toure, Marietou Sano, Djeneba Sako, Babacar M'Baye, and Mariama Basse (Unfortunately Marie Basse-Wiles is unable to attend because she will be in Senegal.)

So check it out at dancingvillage.com, where you'll find lots of photos from previous camps, plenty of information, and a registration form to download and fill out. If you're not ready to commit yet, that's okay too -- it's still early and there's plenty of space. You can write back on Tribe or email campfareta@yahoo.com if you have questions.

We hope to see you there!

peace,

christina

p.s. Also check Youssouf's website, westafricandance.com, for information about his next trip to Guinee!

Just wanted to share a recent video with you all: all opinions appreciated
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4hkz4xXTk

In April 2008 some of the finest drummers in the Gambia were not only my teachers of traditional West African percussion music, but also became my percussion section for my compositions!

It was a very special time for me, and a great chance to work with some fantastic musicians from Africa.
It did feel very odd at first, telling a master drummer how I wanted to him to play an drum that he had mastered as a child. They were all really open minded to my compositions and it all got picked up really quickly.
Once the guys knew how the parts I had written should lock together, it just grooved and sounded like I had always wanted it to when I originally wrote the music.

We recorded towards the end of the week and am working on getting the recordings finished, hopefully to tour this material with the guys and then get them into the schools to run workshops in west africa drumming.

Thank you Mango Ballet for the experience and we will record again soon! Thanks to Jahman for setting the whole thing up for me, and Karl Jah for filming!
Here is my immediate question. They are hairy, and I like the mellow sound that it creates, but the hair on the sangban's heads is thicker and longer than the other two, and the sustain on the sangban's tone is less. I think that the hair and sustain may be inversely proportional.

Since I don't want them completely bald (being subject to that curse myself LOL) I'm considering getting out the clippers and giving the sangban a trim.
I want to extend a personal thanks to the drummers. The drumming last night was absolutely sublime. I heard so many comments from audience & performers alike about the extremely high quality of drumming & the wonderful and very visible synergy between performers & drummers. Folks in the audience mentioned that to me several times & I found myself wanting to hang with the drummers, dancing in the background rather than on stage. The drumming was deeply satisfying beyond words.

hey there, dancers and drummers --

Here are a few more pieces of information for you, in case you're still thinking of signing up for Camp Fareta in California, July 8-15, but haven't done so yet, or you're already signed up and want to get even more excited!

First, due to popular demand, we will have 2 dundun dance classes at camp, one with Mariama and one with Nima or M'Mah. One will occur earlier in the week and one will be later in the week.

Also Lansana will be available for balafon lessons. If we get enough people who want to study with him, we will offer the classes for free; otherwise they will be available for a separate fee. So let us know if that's something that interests you.

We also want to let you know that you can pay for camp with a credit card via Paypal. Just let us know if you'd like to use that option and we'll hook you up.

And a clarification -- the "regular" rates (not the early rates) for camp have been extended to July 2. That means the price is still $750 for the week or $120 a day. After July 2, we will be in the "late registration" category, with an extra $20 added on to each individual or family/group.

Check dancingvillage.com for lots of photos from last year's camp and a registration form for this year. We're looking forward to a great camp and we hope to see you there!

be well -

It would be great to find one more player with even a little experience to practice on a fairly regular basis.
Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can find a sangban in the Boston, MA area? Used or new would be fine. I'd prefer a sangban, but I'd consider another djun-djun if i like how it sounds/feels. Any advice would be much appreciated.
big fun playing drums under the redwoods. Its strictly fire arts and drumming, and a little bit of DJ stuff. The
atmosphere is a really supportive learning environment which is impromptu but at the same time less stressful
and structured than a class. everything below the line is the announcement ~p
___________________________________________________________________________________

FireDrums V
Thursday, May 3rd - Sunday, May 6th, 2007

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 4 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire Spinning and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for FireDrums V. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.

Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

As always, this is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering!

Please car pool as there is very limited parking!

These 2 previous topics are VERY IMPORTANT POINTS!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 2nd gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. The Camp Ranger commented on how wonderful and respectful everyone was at our last gathering and he was very glad to see that we are not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!

Advanced Purchase Tickets: $40
*Only the 1st 450 pre-sold tickets are available at this price*
*The last 150 advanced tickets will be $50*

On-Sight (Gate) Tickets: $50
*Only available if FireDrums doesn't sell-out from Advanced Purchase Tickets*

To purchase tickets and for more info, please go to firedrums.org

Ticket price includes entrance to the gathering, use of all of the features listed above, up to 72 hours of camping, swimming, and lots of fun! By securing the reservation for our exclusive use, we can now put the funds received towards making this an even better experience for everyone at a lower individual cost than the first 3 FireDrums gatherings.

It's one of those that the more you listen to it, the more amazing it becomes. I mostly play Guinea style and the majority of my CD's are of the 3 dunun variety.

Abdoul is playing his tradition from Mali. The recording is clear and the dunun are featured prominently on a few tracks, like Sunu and Wolosodon, where he throws in a number of variations. (dunun solo) But it also has a variety of musicians and instruments like a kora-like instrument. It just sounds like Mali and I'm feeling the desert.

I think its available at www.systemkrush.com and no this isn't an advertisement for them, even though I do support "independent record labels operating on a Fair Trade principle." That part definately doesn't suck.

If you are currently or aspiring to be involved with the dance, drum or fire performing arts then don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn and grow at the largest north east gathering built just for you. This fall we have expanded added more class types and will be offering public transportation access (check out the website for details). We are also opening an indoor area for performing arts equipment vendors to come and show their wares. This is a great opportunity to see, hold, and play with different toys made by different folks. If you are a vendor of performing arts toys and want to participate in this way, please email chad@freedomthrufire.com (no charge to setup, you just have to be open to educating everyone on your stuff).
not serve us into this alchemical fire.

We use the word Sacred in the title of this Experience
to infer deep, deep levels of gratitude and respect for each
other, for ourselves and for life. You are encouraged
to explore, maintain and/or cultivate whatever
worldviews work for you, so long as they are mutually
respectful of everyone in the circle.

We will provide this sacred space in the same general
Playa locations last year's all-night Sacred Fire Circle -
approximately 300 yards to the Southeast of the spine
(visualize 2 o‚clock on the dial), a few minutes
bicycle ride beyond the Temple).

Please bring:
drums/percussion instruments (we will have a lockable
trailer at the Circle on Wednesday so as to facilitate
early delivery of drums), warm clothes and enough
water and food to keep yourself nourished. The Sacred

Does anyone know of a good place to acquire the lyrics and song melodies that accompany the rhythms of Guinea primarily? Rather than get a Konate or Keita music CD, I'm looking for books that contain the lyrics, translations, actual sheet music (which ain't gonna happen), and a sample CD.

I've found an instructional book (with CD) that has over 80 songs from 6 languages and English translations called Songs of Africa. I'm leary of getting it because I get a sense that the songs are more akin to Ghana and Zimbabwe.

Specifically, I'm looking for the melodies (and more lyrics would be nice) to:
Somba Koro (a song for gidamba)
Sinte
Menie
Liberte (the 6/8 version)
Djole (Sierra Leonne)
or anything else from Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Sierra Leonne, Mali...

It just seems that I can get lyrics but no melody or melody from a performance but have to guess at the lyrics (without translation).

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
